Companies are still relocating offices away from city centres, but for different reasons from those which motivated relocation in the 1980s. Now, the main reason for relocation is the opportunity to establish a more efficient workplace to meet the demands of different working practices. In 1994, 19 large companies moved out of central London, for example, and there are indications that companies could be seeking new locations to prepare for the growing cost differences between central London and the provinces.

A foot in both camps

Hong Kong surveyor and businessman, C.Y. Leung, served on the Basic Law Consultative Committee which helped agree legal foundations between Hong Kong and China in preparation for the handover in 1997, of Hong Kong to China. Leung is tipped to be nominated for chief executive. Leung, owner of C.Y. Leung and Company, hopes to expand his business post-1997, and insists he is not interested in becoming chief executive.

Rural White Paper aims to boost country economy
Article Abstract:
The UK government's new 'Rural England' White Paper is designed to put forward plans for a revived countryside economy. It makes a number of suggestions, including the introduction of a new rural business use class. This would create the right conditions for business diversification, but would ensure that uncontrolled expansion does not take place.
