New ensnares retailers
Article Abstract:
Some high street retailers are competing against the challenge of Internet shopping by opening up large outlets which offer a variety of products in a welcoming environment. The value of Internet shopping is estimated at around 2 billion pounds sterling. The major high street shops are also facing a reduction in profits due to competition from the discount stores. The industry predicts Marks and Spencer PLC will cut a number of its outlets as part of its reorganisation. Retail landlords may have to be prepared to accept lower rents for secondary space and offer flexible leases.

The future for town centres
Article Abstract:
The UK's town centre retailers have seen a considerable decline in revenues over recent years as competition from new out-of-town superstores and hypermarkets has increased. Local authorities need to take urgent action to reverse this trend. This should include routing traffic round town centres, providing parking within easy walking distance and improving public transport. It is important to encourage secondary and speciality retailers, giving High Street shopping areas more interest and diversity.
