New urbanism brings downtwon back
Article Abstract:
As cities begin to invest in their downtowns, industries are moving back downtown. General Motors, for example, is moving its world headquarters from a midtown Detroit location to downtown Detroit's Renaissance Center. In Cleveland, through the auspices of a group of private and public investors, over $3.5 billion had been invested in downtown by 1998. The same is happening in midsize and small cities. Locating downtown can provide cost savings because of government programs, such as business improvement districts, empowerment zones, enterprise zones, and tax increment financing.

The new facilities and expansions that contributed to the state's economic expansion are discussed.
