No relief for tenants
Article Abstract:
The UK Housing Act 1988 has left some private residential tenants with fewer rights than they could have otherwise claimed under general law. Tenants who were in rent arrears were allowed a chance to pay off their arrears whilst still keeping their lease. But a case heard in the UK Court of Appeal during 1999 interpreted the Housing Act as disallowing tenants relief from forfeiture. Possession by the landlord would be permitted if the rent arrears had not been reduced to less than two months when the case was heard in court.
