Northern exposure: Tom Bloxham of Urban Splash dreams of creating a Covent Garden in Manchester's Northern Quarter
Article Abstract:
Urban Splash is a property development company run by Tom Bloxham, purchasing derelict inner city buildings and transforming them into viable mixed use developments. The company's latest venture was converting the former Affleck & Brown department store in Manchester into loft appartments and retail outelts. The company tends not to use agents and it has its own funding arrangements. It employs 10 architects and Bloxham believes that any good features on old buildings should be retained, with additions of contemporary quality.

Promenade potential
Article Abstract:
The 90 million pounds sterling leisure development planned for Gunwharf Quay, Portsmouth, England, should provide a major tourism focus for a city suffering from defence cuts. However, local experts raise doubts about the ability of the existing transport infrastructure to cope with the new development. Gunwharf Quay will have a 540 feet high watchtower as its central attraction, and will include a new promenade and leisure and retail developments. Details of other development schemes in the area are included.
