Now it's your neck too
Article Abstract:
Six detailed sets of regulations were added, in 1992, to the UK Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. Health and safety officers have strong powers, and are rigorously enforcing these regulations, so employers should ensure that they have a good safety and health system in place. Inspectors may serve either an improvement or a prohibition notice where breaches of the regulations are observed. In the case of a prohibition notice the officer may close down the premises immediately. Observations on each of the six sets of regulations are included.

The UK's Working Time Regulations 1998, which implement the EC Working Time Directive, allow individual workers to opt out of the 48-hour average weekly working-time limit only by individual agreement in writing with the employer. Employees are entitled to daily rest periods of 11 consecutive hours in each 24, along with weekly rest periods of at least 24 hours in each seven-day period. There is a statutory right to three weeks' paid annual leave for all employees covered by the regulations.
