Article Abstract:
European governments are not facing up to the imminent problems caused by their populations, which are getting older, and the continuing globalisation of the markets. Multinational companies have responded to the growth in foreign markets by increasing overseas investment and opening up production facilities to serve the emerging markets. Financial markets in the West favour indexing funds and the use of equity market options. Whilst markets in Japan suffer extreme fluctuations in response to the actions of the Japanese, who prefer to follow trends rather than act individually.

Fat cats under fire
Article Abstract:
The Hampel report has been criticized for not specifying clear standards of corporate governance which would act as a measurement against which all businesses could be measured. President of the Board of Trade Margaret Beckett does not seem to agree with the report when it indicated if a company is prosperous it cannot be accountable. The report seems to infer that successful companies do not always have high standard of governance yet evidence shows that poorly performing companies often have inferior governance. The committee is led by Sir Ronnie Hampel.

Saving with fire safety
Article Abstract:
The draft British Standard for building design, entitled 'The Application of Fire Safety Engineering Principles to Fire Safety in Buildings,' is likely to have a significant impact on the fire safety element of building design. Fire safety is already a sensitive area, with conflict between those who focus on efficiency and cost-effectiveness and those who call for as many safety measures as possible. Looking closely at the real risks will allow safer buildings to be designed at lower cost.
