Reluctant heroes
Article Abstract:
Demand for office space in Birmingham city centre, England, is buoyant but supply is low. Local agents blame the large number of listed buildings in the city which make redevelopment difficult. Others suggest speculative development will not go ahead unless the buildings are prelet. Developers point to the high cost of development. No speculative development is planned for 1999. Rents have reached 20 pounds sterling per sq ft. There is some evidence of firms choosing other city centres to set up business due to the high rents and lack of space in Birmingham.

Bankers Trust eyes Spitalfields option
Article Abstract:
It is believed that Bankers Trust is holding informal negotiations with Helical Bar with a view to developing the site at Spitalfields, London, England, vacated by the London International Financial Futures and Options Exchange in Mar 1998. It has been confirmed that, if Bankers Trust selects Spitalfields, it will gain control of the whole site apart from the section to be taken by ABN Amro. Moving to Spitalfields would cost Bankers Trust almost 200 million pounds sterling.
