PPG 6's grey areas
Article Abstract:
The UK government's PPG 6 planning guidelines for retail schemes have failed to give developers and planners the clarity they require. PPG 6 contains guidance on drafting planning conditions, but lacks detail about how local plan policies should be written. It states that local authorities drawing up development plans should consider the need for a new development before adopting a sequential approach to choosing sites for new retail schemes. However, it fails to define need, which can be interpreted in many different ways.

Retailers hit granite wall in Aberdeen
Article Abstract:
The unitary authority in Aberdeen, Scotland, has been slow to approve new retail development. This means that there is a significant shortage of retail space in the town, with rents rising as a result. A number of plans for retail developments are currently under scrutiny, including plans by Robertson Group for a 3,902 sq mt retail park at Edgar Road and plans by Miller Developments for bulky goods retail at Bannermill, Beach Boulevard.
