Planning for power
Article Abstract:
Keith Vaz is a trained barrister and the UK Labour party's spokesman on planning policy. His main aim, if Labour comes into power, is to create partnerships between local authorities, community groups and the private property sector to develop an urban planning policy. He believes that the current government does not have a unified urban regeneration policy and says that Labour will consolidate schemes into a single Civic Grant fund. The official Labour party policy is to be against out-of-town developments and Vaz believes that he must put forward a positive case for town centres.

An industry hungry for change
Article Abstract:
Real estate will only continue to be an attractive investment if there are far-reaching changes in property practices, according to a 1996 survey by Cameron Markby Hewitt, solicitors. The survey of around 120 people in the property industry found that the biggest concern was liquity, with three-quarters of respondents calling for new structures and ways of operating. The most popular proposed measure was the setting up of a central property register. Other suggested ways to improve liquidity include having up-to-date property 'log-books' and shorter and less complex leases.
