REIT executive compensation accelerates
Article Abstract:
Real estate investment trust (REIT) executives' compensation packages are growing very quickly, but management expectations are growing even faster. In response to higher expectations, REITs are using long-term incentives more aggressively. Trends in REIT executive compensation are analyzed, and the compensation packages of Disney's Michael Eisner and Vornado Realty Trust's Michael Fascitelli are examined.

The compensation packages for real estate investment trust (REIT) executives have grown dramatically since 1993, according to FPL Associates studies. Many REIT executives' salaries have virtually doubled. The average CEO's base salary will be $500,000, in 1998, up from $225,000 in 1993. CEO bonuses, in 1998, will average nearly 75% of salary, and a few CEOs will receive bonuses of at least $1 million.

Article Abstract:
There have been significant changes in the real estate investment trust and investment advisor industries during 1996 and 1997. As a result, executive compensation has increased for several companies. This increase in compensation is expected to continue until the year 2000. Compensation increases are also tied to long-term incentives.
