Re-tuning the industry engine

Article Abstract:

Declining car sales are forcing the world's car manufacturers to reevaluate their marketing strategies and reduce costs. In the UK, both fleet and private sales have fallen, while the cost of running a car is rising. Ford Motor Co. is rethinking its marketing strategy by developing global car models that will allow it to reduce its number of car plants. Meanwhile, smaller producers have seen mergers as a way to increase their market share and improve profit margins. Additionally, tough competition has forced rationalisation among component suppliers.

Keeping up with the neighbours

Article Abstract:

The county of Cheshire faces strong economic competition from Birmingham, Greater Manchester, Merseyside and Wales, and has the disadvantage of having lost its assisted area status. It has a number of vulnerable industries, including chemicals and cars, and unemployment is high in its older industrial towns. However, employment is rising in the service sector, and efforts are being made to encourage manufacturing diversification.
