Recognising the risk of derivatives
Article Abstract:
The collapse of British merchant bank Barings PLC serves to illustrate the need for business to exercise proper risk management strategies. The fact that a single derivatives trader could cause the demise of the bank shows that there was a basic problem of inadequate risk management and lack of internal control. Clients of banks should be aware that there may be a possible conflict of interest between the advice the banks give and their proprietary dealing activity. Companies must protect themselves from their bankers by considering the safety not only of their cash balances but also that of indirect holdings.

EMU: a risk to Britain?
Article Abstract:
European monetary union (EMU) certainly offers some advantages for the UK's larger companies. In particular, it would abolish currency risk and cut transaction costs in Europe. However, it is worth taking into account that EMU could also have a negative impact, especially if it causes the European economy to stagnate. Participating in EMU appears to present more serious political and economic dangers than not doing so.
