Article Abstract:
Whitbread PLC is finding increasing competition when trying to acquire the leasehold on high street outlets. Once the lease has been agreed the management has found obtaining planning permission can be very time consuming. They have issued a guide detailing their property requirements. Whitbread had an operating profit, in the half year to August 1997, of 221.1 million pounds sterling. The company plans to lease or buy 200 outlets, in 1998, and has 300 million pounds sterling to fund its purchases. Whitbread have expanded into hotels and restaurants in addition to public houses.

A tale of two motorways
Article Abstract:
Companies wishing to relocate offices tend not to move between the areas around the M3 and M4 motorways. To retain their staff they prefer to stay around the motorway in which they are already established. The area to the west of London, England, is very popular for office occupiers and some local agents report a shortfall in available space. The rental value of offices in the area can be as much as eight pounds per sq ft. The M4 is more popular than the M3 because there is a larger stock of offices and more companies already based in the area.
