Exports of manufacturing goods from the West Midlands, England, accounts for 25% of the total for the UK. Unemployment levels for the region is at 5.9%, with 16% of workers employed by foreign companies. Some 4 billion pounds sterling has been invested, in the region, by foreign companies. Manufacturing is an very important industry in the West Midlands, employing 560,000 workers. Some 11.6% of electronic and electrical companies, in the UK, are based in the region. The central location of the West Midlands also makes the area a popular location for distribution companies.

The East Midlands, England, is a popular area for service sector industries. An increase of 39,000 workers have been employed in the service sector businesses between Jun 1995-Jun 1996. The East Midlands is an important area, in the UK, for manufacturing and engineering industries. Some 7% of the UK's total GDP is produced from the region. Its central location also makes it popular with distribution companies. Some 200 million pounds sterling was granted to the region for four new enterprise zones. Despite having highly skilled worked wages are below the UK average.
