Three main factors explain why high-technology firms choose a particular state as an industrial location. These are a competitive business environment, a solid educational system and a strong and productive work force. The states that lead the way in terms of number of high-technology companies are California, Arizona and Texas. States such as Virginia, Florida and Georgina are hoping that the semiconductor industry revives in 1999 and 2000 to attract investments in their respective areas.
