Steaming ahead
Article Abstract:
The call centre for GNER is moving to Baron House, Newcastle, England, which will provide 11,000 sq ft of working space for nine pounds sterling per sq ft. GNER is planning to expand its workforce from 30-40 employees to 250 by Spring 1998. The management of GNER favoured Newcastle because of the availability of labour and lower costs. The DTI awarded GNER a grant of 100,000 pounds sterling if they relocated in Newcastle. GNER has a seven year agreement to run the railway services previously provided by InterCity East Coast. The company took over the franchise in April 1996.

Evolution not revolution
Article Abstract:
Business parks in the UK generally attract foreign companies more readily than domestic ones, which tend to prefer to remain in a city centre location. However, the characteristics of business parks will probably change as the government places more emphasis on urban renewal and planning regulations become more restrictive. It will become almost impossible for developers to construct a business park on a large greenfield site, and there will be strong pressure on business parks to become sustainable from the point of view of planning.

Ringing the changes
Article Abstract:
According to King Sturge, Bristol boasts over 850,000 square feet (sq ft) of poor-quality secondhand office space. The properties in question date from the 1960s/70s and include high-rise air-conditioned towers. The oversupply problem is expected to be aggravated by the planned departure of major occupiers Sun Life, British Telecom and Bristol & West building society, which together account for more than 500,000 sq ft of office space.
