The VAT fight goes on
Article Abstract:
The property industry's opposition to government amendments to the Finance Bill may result in a government back-track. The amendments, which affect clause 37, have been made in an attempt to clamp down on tax avoidance and have been drafted by Customs & Excise. The British Property Federation (BPF) has submitted proposals for the definition of tax avoidance. Although the government has acknowledged the extent of opposition to the amendments, no guarantee has been made that BPF proposals will be implemented.

Effects of the 1995 revaluation
Article Abstract:
The UK real estate industry will be affected by revaulation of the rating system in 1995, with locations in central London and the south east of England expected to benefit. The rating revaluation uses rental values from 1993 and liability increases have occurred in the Midlands and North of England. There will also be a need to reassess how the retail sector is treated since rental values have fallen sharply. There is also a need for harmonization between Scotland and England and Wales.
