Article Abstract:
The county council structure plan for Hertfordshire, England, proposes the construction of 3,600 homes on green belt land near Stevenage, England, by 2011, with work beginning in 2004. There would be 10,000 homes by 2021. The use of green belt land has attracted opposition from local residents and from pressure groups such as Friends of The Earth. The county council has responded by voting to withdraw support for the scheme, and is calling on Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott to reduce the county's housing allocation.

Access v affordability
Article Abstract:
The UK Housebuilders Federation has objected to government plans to introduce new legislation regarding housing for the disabled, which will lead to some types of houses having to be abandoned. Housebuilders point out the new regulations regarding the placement of power points will cause costs to rise in all houses. Disabled houses owners previously received government funding to pay for any changes. Builders point out some of their residential sites will not appeal to the disabled because of their location. The new laws call for wider doorways and a downstairs toilet in every new house.
