The long-term view of off-road benefits
Article Abstract:
New legislation in the 1999 budget has increased the cost of transporting goods by road. Some transport experts suggest railways will have to be more reliable in order to successfully carry freight. A number of property agents confirm there is an increasing interest in development near railway terminals. Some of the major supermarkets have been trying out rail freight to move their products. Although the need for special wagons could delay the change to rail from road transport. A new warehouse facility is being built at the Daventry International Freight Terminal.

Employing pragmatism
Article Abstract:
Many of the local authorities in the East Midlands, England, have been very supportive of encouraging new businesses into the region. The East Midlands has been suffering from a declining industrial base, particularly with the closure of the coal mines. There were only 2,500 people employed in East Midlands mines in 1999, compared to 50,000 miners in 1981. The revision of the Regional Planning Guidance for the East Midlands document calls for regeneration of the area but not in the distribution sector, as it offers few employment opportunities.
