Wallonia, Belgium: leading edge excellence

Aerospace, aeronautics and telecommunications companies can find an accomodating place in Wallonia, Belgium, whose industries in the abovementioned sectors are well developed. Wallinia boasts of having 2,800 workers specializing in the abovementioned business sectors and much of the activity in the sector enjoys government support. The national government subsidizes the industries with a budget of $185 mil annually while the local government of Wallonia has set aside an R&D budget of $12 mil and investment budget of $15 mil between 1992 and 1997. Part of the research facilities in the region is the University of Liege's Centre Spatial de Liege, which is at the cutting edge of optics, optoelectronics and space engineering.

The Wallonia Region in Belgium, aside from being the geographic center of the European Union, is a good business site for the distribution industry because of its excellent transportation and up-to-date telecommunications facilities. In addition, Wallonia has skilled workers who can speak many languages, a plus in the establishment of long-distance telephone service centers. It also has affordable rental rates, and an incentive package for call centers that includes low labor costs, training and employment subsidies and tax reductions.
