Born with a skillet in her hands
Article Abstract:
The references to food in the works of Zora Neale Hurston, the abundance or scarcity of it, the sharing or withholding of it which offers subtle insights into the culture, characters and the conflicts in Zora's world are explored. Her understanding of the significance of food, the preparation of it, the presentation and necessity for it informs situations and scenes throughout her writing, describing custom, delineating character, and defining conflict in much of her memory-infused fiction.

Until the past few years, Southerners tended to assign certain foods and drinks to certain social classes and that class distinction is evident in several plays of Tennessee Williams.
