The conquest of disbelief in After the War: first world, first person, and the gift of friendship
Article Abstract:
Richard Marius's 'After the War' is a long and wholly admirable essay on the nature of friendship, how it comes into being, how it fades and dies, how it can be renewed and sustained even in the face of death. The novel is a sustained attack upon all those received notions of plausibility according to which friendship is unthinkable or at best remote.
