'Fengyue meng' and the courtesan novel
Article Abstract:
The courtesan novel 'Fengyue meng' (author's preface dated 1848) represents the earliest Chinese city novel, providing literary context for the first Shanghai novel 'Haishang hua liezhuan.' Set in Yangzhou, 'Fengyue meng' also belongs to the realistic type of courtesan novel. 'Fengyue meng' exhibits some continuities with the prior tradition of Yangzhou vernacular and oral narrative, while also inaugurating a new development. Thematic contradictions of Chinese cautionary fiction as well as structural and other aspects of the work are discussed.
