Hong Kong, 1997: East vs. West and the struggle for democratic reform within the Chinese state
Article Abstract:
Hong Kong went through a 15-year decolonization period that was marked by a stalemate struggle between Great Britain and the People's Republic of China from 1982 until its official handover in 1997. The decolonization involved British efforts to push democratic reforms in the communist system of China through the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. However, China could only 'mechanically copy' Western democracy at a time of its budding economic decentralization.

Essentially, the clash between anti-communist and pro-communist supporters will become even more inevitable in 1997.

Hong Kong in 1994: democracy, human rights, and the post-colonial political order
Article Abstract:
Hong Kong continues to maintain its equanimity despite its imminent transfer to Chinese rule in 1997. Residents remain generally indifferent to political issues as they continue to enjoy life in the booming capitalist economy. While the prospect of reunification brings some apprehension over the island's political fate, it has also infused confidence in its future, with China and Hong Kong becoming each other's major investor and trading partner.
