The Japanese political developments in 2004 show Prime Minister Koizumi Junichiro's real picture as a reformist leader, willing to use his popularity and an empowered cabinet against the entrenched vested interests of the Liberal Democratic Party. Koizumi's political mechanism of presenting reforms directly to the electorate, wielding power through a strengthened Cabinet Office are discussed.

The year 2005 was Prime Minister Koizumi's finest hour. He engineered an extraordinary electoral landslide that destroyed opponents who were gaining strength in response to his recalcitrance on Yasukuni Shrine visits and the confrontational handling of postal privatization, the centerpiece of his reforms.
