The novels 'L'Enfant de sable' and 'La Nuit sacree' by Tahar Ben Jelloun include allusions to Sufi poetry that suggest a relationship to Islamic mystical literature. The use of profane love as an allegory for mystical union is a common theme in Islamic mysticism that also appears in Ben Jelloun's work.
