Robert Hart and Gustav Detring during the Boxer Rebellion
Article Abstract:
A reconstruction of the activities of Robert Hart during the Boxer Rebellion is presented, based on a file discovered in the archives of the Chinese Maritime Service held at the Second Historical Archives in Nanjing, China. The structures, connections, concerns, and modes of operation characteristic of the world of transnational elites at the turn of the twentieth century in China are illustrated to examine closely the activities of Hart and Gustav Detring, the German Commissioner of Customs, during the Boxer Rebellion.

Robert Hart and China's statistical revolution
Article Abstract:
Robert Hart, elected as the Honorary Fellow of the Royal Statistical Society, was not a professional statistician, though he published one paper in the Journal of the Statistical Society of London, which was not more than an extract of a conclusion he wrote to reports written by the Commissioners at China's Treaty Ports on local opium consumption. The Qing statistical institutions are explored to find out if Hart had any influence on China's statistical revolution.
