'Y a bon banania': L'Afrique et le discours nationaliste dans "Tombouctou" de Maupassant
Article Abstract:
The story "Tombouctou" by Guy de Maupassant is ideologically ambivalent in its representation of issues of colonialism and nationalism in late 19th-century France. The story concerns an African soldier in the Franco-Prussian war. A narratological analysis of the tale highlights the themes of colonial expansion and the recovery of territories occupied by Prussia. Maupassant's ideological ambiguity allowed him to avoid alienating any part of his audience. Article text is in French.

'Payer' or 'recompenser': royal gratitude in 'Le Cid.'
Article Abstract:
Pierre Corneille supported the emerging 17th-century doctrine of absolutism in his portrayal of royal gratitude in 'Le Cid.' Indebtedness to a subject put a monarch in a difficult position. Service to the crown should be regarded as a duty not requiring reward, but the king is expected to exhibit generosity. The king must establish a distinction between payment and recompense. A series of tests concerning divine gratitude leads up to the final scene in 'Le Cid.'
