2,000 pounds sterling to the rescue: one guillemot, or an acre of meadow ...
Article Abstract:
The UK's Wildlife Trusts organization believes that attempting to rehabilitate injured wild animals is largely a waste of time and money. It feels that it would be much better to focus on protecting more sustainable resources, such as nature reserves. This view is strongly opposed by some animal protection organizations, which feel that any investment in rehabilitating wild animals is justified. Research indicates that only 1% of oiled seabirds survive when they are returned to the wild, but some people feel that it is still worth spending time and money on such work.

Alone again, naturally
Article Abstract:
The Elan Valley in Wales attracts very few visitors, even though it is a haven for some of the rarest flora and fauna in the UK. Some 80% of the Elan Valley is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest. There is a very large plain of heather and tussock grass at the top of the valley system, while further down the valley there are hanging oak forests and many waterfalls and streams. The valley's main attraction is the red kite, which lives in large numbers in the area.

A dust-up with the Scrubbes
Article Abstract:
Scrublands in London, England, are extensively used by local people for activities such as walking dogs and playing football. These people fear that plans by local councils to 'improve' scrublands will in fact damage them, removing valuable habitats for bees, birds and butterflies. It is vital to ensure that urban regeneration plans do not lead to a loss of biological diversity. Campaigning by groups such as the London Wildlife Trust has had some limited success.
