A battle for control of women's bodies

Article Abstract:

There has been a dramatic rise in the number of Caesarian births in the UK over recent years. This is mainly because young obstetricians do not have the skills required to avoid a Caesarian delivery, especially turning a baby which is in the breech position. Some Caesarian births are life-saving, but many are not necessary and the women involved do not usually have the chance to make a rational decision. Women should be able to choose to have a Caesarian birth if they wish, but need to have all the right information to make an informed decision.

Article Abstract:

Research indicates that aromatherapy could play a role in reducing fear and anxiety among women in labour, thus improving the childbirth experience. Essential oils used in this research included frankincense, lavender, jasmine, rose and lemon. In some cases, a carrier oil was used for massage, while in others women in labour were given a drop of oil on the palm or forehead or a taper impregnated with an essential oil was used. Aromatherapy has the advantage of being inexpensive and easy to administer.

Article Abstract:

Intrusive medical practices which fail to take the woman's wishes into account are the main reason why many women have a very negative experience of childbirth. Recent research indicates that the presence of a strong, reliable midwife who is already known to the woman giving birth is the most effective way of ensuring that the woman is able to remain in control and have a positive birth experience. It is vital that one-to-one medical care is developed if woman giving birth are really to be helped.
