A chapter in need of an author
Article Abstract:
The hardware and software which would be necessary to link all the UK's 4,200 public libraries to create a single information network already exists. However, purchasing and installing this technology would cost considerably more than 100 million pounds sterling. It is widely agreed that such a network would be a very valuable asset, but no agreement has yet been reached on how it could be funded. The existing government is unwilling to meet the entire cost, and this is unlikely to change if the Labour party wins the forthcoming general election.

The Net shy go shopping
Article Abstract:
The Virtual Emporium in Santa Monica, Los Angeles, has 30 computer terminals which are locked onto the Web sites of 80 online retailers worldwide which have reached an agreement with this store. The store does not charge for this service, making its money instead by charging retailers a percentage of sales. It particularly aims to attract people who feel uneasy using the Internet and still want to meet people when they shop.

Don't ditch the tranny yet
Article Abstract:
There are now more than 100 radio outlets across the world which are broadcasting via the Internet. In the UK, Virgin is the only station with a cybertransmitter. Radio broadcasting via the Internet onto a PC is made possible with the use of RealAudio software, developed by Progressive Networks. This allows anyone with an ordinary computer and a connection to the World Wide Web to listen and broadcast sounds in real time.
