A few good reasons not to be afraid of Edward Albee
Article Abstract:
It is important to participate in life to the full, according to playwright Edward Albee. This belief has prompted him to include in his plays many characters who fail to participate in life. His work declined in popularity in the 1980s, but he is now enjoying a revival with 'Three Tall Women,' which premiered in Vienna, Austria, in 1991 and was seen in the UK for the first time in 1994. His most recent play, 'The Play About the Baby,' is due to be premiered at the Almeida Theatre in London, England, in 1998.

Kicking against the pricks
Article Abstract:
Playwright Arnold Wesker acknowledges that his play 'Chips with Everything,' which is to open at the National Theatre in London, England, on Sep 4, 1997, belongs to a certain era. However, this does not mean that it is not of interest today. He is concerned that some of his plays have not been performed in the UK, believing that this means that there is no sense of him having developed as a playwright. However, there are subtle elements which connect 'Chips with Everything' with 'Break, My Heart.'

Working-class lads get their kit on for the lasses
Article Abstract:
Playwright John Godber has always been interested in the underdog. This is reflected in his play 'Up 'n' Under,' which was first performed at the headquarters of the Hull Truck Theatre Company in 1984. Godber later produced a film script of this play, but found it difficult to obtain funding to produce a film. There are some similarities between 'Up 'n' Under' and the extremely successful film 'The Full Monty,' and this may have an impact on the former's success.
