A helping hand for have-nots
Article Abstract:
There are now eight leading law firms on the 'pro bono publico' panel set up by civil liberties organisation Liberty in Jan 1994. This panel deals free of charge with cases which raise human rights or civil liberties issues. It builds on a long tradition in the legal profession of giving free advice to people who cannot afford to pay for it. However, some observers fear that goodwill work of this kind by solicitors and barristers will be exploited, with legal aid schemes being deliberately under-funded.

A bird? A plane? No, it's an abseiling solicitor
Article Abstract:
The 150th anniversary of the Law Society is being marked with the forthcoming National Law Week, which is intended to improve public awareness of the services offered by the legal profession. It is hoped that law firms will be seen in a more positive light, with ordinary people recognising the contribution which solicitors can make to the justice system and to the local economy. Initiatives will include free advice sessions and sponsored events for charities and local communities.
