A small band of unit trust providers consistently outstrips the markets. But attempts to improve the industry could mean fewer star performers
Article Abstract:
Most managers of UK equity unit trusts add no value at all, according to research undertaken by John Cuthbert. However, a small number of investment management groups have consistently added value. These include Lazards, Britannia, Credit Suisse, NPI and ABN Pembroke. The best companies tend to be characterized by a clear investment style which they have used consistently over a considerable length of time. It is likely that overall standards of unit trust management will improve in the future, but it will be less common for fund managers to be permitted to take large risks.

One-man band sets the tone
Article Abstract:
Investment managers rarely follow their own advice but Ian Rushbrook, previously deputy chairman of Ivory & Sime, has about 25% of the shares in Personal Assets trust which he runs. The shares are worth over 2 million pounds sterling. Mr Rushbrook believes in operating investment management as a business and always takes an equity interest in whatever he is associated with. He has broadened the equity range of Personal Assets to suit wealthy private individuals. He enjoys modelling the market's behaviour.

Decision time in pay debate
Article Abstract:
There are currently a number of investigations underway into executive pay packages, and the UK government will soon have to take firm action on this issue. The Cadbury Committee has already recommended the use of remuneration committees made up of independent non-executive directors, but these have generally only approved large pay rises for top executives. It is now time to find practical ways of dealing with this extremely politically sensitive subject.
