A journey to the dark side
Article Abstract:
Theorist Victor Shklovsky was right to state that the purpose of art is to make us notice what is very close to us, according to playwright Paula Vogel. For this reason, she does not feel that it was wrong to choose the subject of paedophilia for her play 'How I Learned to Drive,' even though paedophilia has become a very common subject. Vogel also takes a rather unusual approach to paedophilia, in that the paedophile she portrays is not entirely unsympathetic. She is keen to see negative empathy, or being drawn to the dark side, in the theatre.

Horror of horrors! It ain't all over till the tall, dark and gruesome guy sings
Article Abstract:
Actor Christopher Lee is well aware that he will always be closely associated with horror films, even though he has not appeared in a horror film since the early 1970s. He feels that people often do not appreciate that a strong sense of humour and of the ridiculous was required for some of the roles he has played. He stopped making horror films when he began to feel that they contained too much graphic detail. He is pleased that early Hammer films, which were once dismissed as being of poor quality, are now considered classics.

Article Abstract:
Helen Garner's novel 'Monkey Grip' has been placed on school reading lists in Australia and won her the National Book Council Award. She has written five books and two screenplays. She wrote 'Monkey Grip' in 1978, in diary format, about hippies, sex and drugs when she was 35. After the breakdown of her second marriage she became aware of a spiritual experience which led her to see a Jungian anlayst. She read the Bible from beginning to end and began using imagery and different story-telling techniques.
