Germans delve into the evil past
Article Abstract:
Action Reconciliation, a group within the German Protestant church, organised visits to Lodz, Poland, for young German students to meet people who actually exerienced the Holocaust. Over 200,000 Jews once lived in Lodz, but in 1993 there are only 200. The youngest is Lajb Praskier, 72. The young people try to help the Jews as they feel guilty and ashamed of their country's history and dismayed by the xenophobic violence in the 1990s. They weeded and tidied the part of the cemetery dedicated to the 50,000 Jews who died in Lodz.

Baltic republics fly high after breaking with the rouble
Article Abstract:
Lithuania issued its own currency, litas, in 1992, although the International Monetary Fund criticised it and Latvia and Estonia for leaving the Russian rouble. In Russia inflation rose drastically while the new currencies of the Baltic states held their own. The Estonian kroon celebrated economic success on its first anniversary on Jun 20, 1993. Transition to a market economy and ties with Finland have progressed satisfactorily. Latvia introduced the transitional Latvian rouble and will have the lat in summer 1993.
