A licence to bend our ears, open our eyes and provoke criticism
Article Abstract:
Very mixed views are being expressed about the BBC as it marks its 75th anniversary. Some observers point out that the BBC founded a broadcasting tradition which is still widely admired throughout the world. It accounted for around 45% of all viewing and listening in 1996, and its weekly audience reach remained constant at 95%. However, there has been some criticism of the way in which the BBC is funded through the licence fee. The BBC rejects this criticism, emphasizing that the licence fee provides an extremely wide range of television and radio programmes.

Has the BBC lost the plot?
Article Abstract:
Some observers believe that the BBC is in crisis. It seems to lack confidence, and has adopted a defensive stance. Relations between managers and staff are strained, and there are still problems with scheduling. Others defend the BBC, stating that it is by no means on the point of collapse. They point out that the media takes great pleasure in emphasizing what are believed to be the BBC's mistakes and that allegations made against it are unjustified.

Too much knowledge is a dangerous thing
Article Abstract:
UK television and radio broadcasters are facing growing problems as more ordinary people become very media-aware. Broadcasters wishing to make a documentary, for example, will find that ordinary people are unwilling to simply behave normally. It is also common for ordinary people to adopt strategies to ensure that they are not misquoted. Some people who have appeared in documentaries have gone on to become involved in other media projects.
