A peace as flimsy as papyrus
Article Abstract:
All Middle Eastern countries continue to express support for the peace process in public, but privately are becoming increasingly concerned about whether it will be successful. The assassination of Yitzhak Rabin seems to have increased the desire for reconciliation, but there is still only an uneasy half-peace. It is by no means certain that the peace treaties between Israel and its neighbours planned by the US will bring lasting security.

Movers and shakers impotent in the face of Middle East history
Article Abstract:
Many world leaders attended the funeral of assassinated Israeli president Yitzhak Rabin. There was a clear awareness that the international community can do little in the face of the great bitterness and divisions which still exist in the Middle East. There will be efforts to relaunch the peace process, but it remains to be seen whether Rabin's assassination will prove the driving force for real reconciliation.

The Pope stands still in whirlwind of change
Article Abstract:
Karol Wojtyla, Cardinal Archbishop of Cracow became Pope John Paul II in October 1978 and produced a reign of discipline under centralised authority, although attendance and doctrinal fidelity have not increased as he would wish on the demise of Communism. He disapproves of the luxuries and inessentials of capitalism. He believes in celibacy for priests and sacrifice, motherhood and family duty for women.
