Blair's commitment to both old and new supporters
Article Abstract:
It is widely assumed in the UK that the Labour party will win the next general election. However, Prime Minister Tony Blair is warning against complacency, and has even stated that the Labour party may suffer some damage in forthcoming local elections. In particular, he is aware that the Labour party must continue to appeal to a wide cross-section of the population if it is to win a further term in government. He is therefore seeking to appeal both to traditional and to new Labour supporters.

Mr Blair can help the Lib Dems - but do they want to be helped?
Article Abstract:
UK Prime Minister Tony Blair appears to want the cooperation of the Liberal Democrats more than he actually needs it. However, the Liberal Democrats under new leadership, probably that of Charles Kennedy, will have to be prepared to contribute something to cooperation with the government. If Kennedy wins the leadership contest, he will have to show strong support for cooperative politics shortly afterwards. Liberal Democrats will have to recognize more clearly the fact that many of their seats were gained because Labour supporters voted Liberal Democrat tactically because they wanted to oust the Conservatives.
