Hague faces leadership crisis as five more peers join rebellion
Article Abstract:
Four frontbench spokesmen for the UK Conservative party have resigned following the decision by party leader William Hague to dismiss Lord Cranborne as the leader of the Conservative peers. Hague plots secret strategy to save his job amid election fears
Article Abstract:
The local authority elections taking place in the UK on May 6, 1999, may bring to a head the challenge to William Hague's leadership of the Conservative party. For this reason, Hague is drawing up plans to protect his position. These will include obtaining the support of the right wing of the party by revealing an uncompromising, Euro-sceptic manifesto for the elections to the European Parliament in Jun 1999. Hague's critics within the Conservative party have threatened to take action against him if the party does not make a net gain of 1,000 seats in the local authority elections.
