A rallying cry that inspired my journey into politics
Article Abstract:
The Dimbleby lecture delivered by Roy Jenkins in 1979 can be interpreted as a rallying-cry for those who wanted politics to go beyond being merely a class war. Jenkins presented a vision of a decentralist, radical and internationalist party, and today's Liberal Democrats have become that party. The Labour government is ignoring the plight of the poor, while the Conservative party is split and outdated. There is a clear need for the Liberal Democrats as an independent political force.
