Saddam and UN hammer out deal
Article Abstract:
United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan seems to have been successful in reaching a deal with Iraqi President Saddam Hussein which will avert the threat of US military action against Iraq. It now appears likely that United Nations sanctions against Iraq will be lifted when full evidence has been gathered that Iraq is complying with weapons inspections and that no more chemical or biological weapons are being made. This deal will be strongly opposed by some American politicians who feel that sanctions should only end when Saddam Hussein is removed from power.

How Balfour failed both Jews and Arabs
Article Abstract:
UK involvement in conflict between Jews and Arabs in Palestine led to both sides being betrayed. The UK shed its obligations as the United Nations voted for an Israeli state, and the Jews were left with only half of Palestine, even though Balfour had indicated that they may gain the whole of Palestine as their homeland. Relations between the UK and Israel and the UK and the Arabs remain strained, even though these events took place in the 1940s.
