A round peg in a square hole
Article Abstract:
Richard Eyre, who is to step down as director of the UK's National Theatre on Oct 1, 1997, has transformed the theatre's Olivier auditorium into a theatre in the round for two productions. The first of these is Brecht's 'The Caucasian Chalk Circle,' which is being directed by Simon McBurney. This play is very well suited to theatre in the round, especially as its climax shows two women fighting over a child in the centre of a chalk circle. McBurney is very keen on close contact with the audience, which is a key feature of theatre in the round.

Size isn't everything
Article Abstract:
Some of the best acting of 1998 in the UK came in roles that received little media attention. Jessica Turner brought both depth and humour to 'What You Get and What You Expect' at the Lyric Hammersmith in London, England, while Hayley Carmichael was outstanding in 'Mr Puntila and His Man Matti.' Michelle Fairley, Sheila Fish and Anthony Calf were all excellent in 'Never Land' at the Royal Court in London, while there was great warmth in the musical 'Dr Dolittle.'
