Travelling by car is frequently portrayed in a negative light, with the car being seen as polluting and a consumer of valuable non-renewable resources. However, it should be remembered that alternative means of transport are often not feasible. Travelling by bicycle can be extremely dangerous in busy cities, while public transport is often unreliable and very crowded. Trying to dissuade people from using their car by imposing heavy taxes, for example, is likely to have the opposite effect.

The UK government's new job seeker's allowance is aimed at putting considerable pressure on unemployed people to take up available employment. This has general public support, especially among those who feel that the unemployed are simply lazy. Some observers feel that the government may go as far as to introduce a workfare system along the lines of that operated in the US. Under such a system, unemployed people would be required to work in order to qualify for benefits.
