A schooling for scandal
Article Abstract:
Writers have to be monsters in order to create, according to novelist Edna O'Brien. She feels that this is reflected in her biography of James Joyce, whose work has greatly inspired her since she first read it at the age of 19. She believes that there are a number of parallels between herself and Joyce, including the impact of Joyce's 'Ulysses' and her 'The Country Girls' on their respective mothers. She expresses great admiration for Joyce's honesty and perseverance.
