A second Man United
Article Abstract:
Manchester Business School, the Umist School of Management and the accounting and finance department of Manchester University are allying to form the largest management school in Britain, and possibly in Europe. This could be just the forerunner of many such schemes to prosper in today's hard times. The four universities in Manchester already share their library resources and could possibly eventually combine to form a super-university with over 50,000 students. It looks logical but is not inevitable, London University being engaged at present in a breaking-up exercise into independent institutions.

Either we save on books or sack the teachers
Article Abstract:
Governors at St Peter's, a Gloucester Roman Catholic high school, are faced with difficult choices in order to balance the budget under the Local Management of Schools (LMS) scheme. Over 80% of the budget is for teachers' salaries. Of the 79 teaching staff it is possible that five may be made redundant but this would have most impact on the pupils with special educational needs. The school has 1,233 pupils including 238 sixth-formers, and has an excellent record of academic achievement. The annual budget of 1,667 pounds sterling per pupil is approximately what independent day schools get per term.

Leave now! And don't come back
Article Abstract:
Children with disruptive behaviour are increasingly being excluded from schools, targetting susceptible pupils at nursery or primary school levels could ease the problem. As special schools close, mainstream schools are increasingly burdened with difficult pupils whom they are loathe to take on incase their school drops in the truancy and examination league tables. More schools refuse or exclude such pupils and education authorities find it difficult to place the children. Long term results may be found by supporting disruptive pupils at an early age.
