A snapshot in time
Article Abstract:
The Whitechapel Gallery in London, England, is currently holding an exhibition of luminous photographic images produced by Jeff Wall, a professor at the University of British Columbia. He uses latest digital computer technology to produce large photographic transparencies. These are then inserted within the frame of a light-box of the same size, and back-lighting is used to produce a luminous effect. They draw inspiration from Old Masters such as Vermeer and Poussin.

They shoot tourists, don't they?
Article Abstract:
The 'Small World' exhibition of photographs by Martin Parr, currently being held at the Photographers' Gallery, Great Newport Street, London, WC2, focuses on the replication of parts of the world in other parts of the world and on the search for images of signifier-congruence or discontinuity. There are many images of tourism, and colour film is used to give these a sort of hyper-reality. His photographs can sometimes be cruel, exploiting the people they depict.

Tears, trophies and tripods
Article Abstract:
A new exhibition of sports photography being held at the Royal Photographic Society, London, UK, uses photographs from the files of All-sport agency. It traces the developments in sports photography over recent decades, which have been closely linked with the growing national obsession with sport. The older archive photographs included in the exhibition are particularly interesting.
