A sorry business
Article Abstract:
The Vatican has made a number of significant apologies since it admitted in 1992 that the Catholic Church had been wrong to silence Galileo for claiming that the Earth moved round the Sun. Theological experts are now creating the basis for an apology for the entire Inquisition. This review of the Inquisition reflects the Vatican's desire to make 2000 a Great Jubilee, a year in which there is repentance for the past. Some observers have reservations about the way in which this process is being undertaken, and feel that high levels of secrecy will invalidate any apology for the Inquisition.

How Rome dealt with a turbulent priest
Article Abstract:
The Vatican's decision to pronounce excommunication on radical theologian Father Tissa Balasuriya, a member of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate, is regarded by some observers as very harsh, even if, as claimed, Fr Balasuriya questioned the infallibility of the Pope. The priest was in a difficult position as a theologian in Sri Lanka, where only 8% of the population are Christians, and was attempting to make Christian dogmas understandable to ordinary people. He was undoubtedly irritating to the Vatican, but was not guilty of heresy.

A scandal for one man but no crisis for the church
Article Abstract:
Some observers have stated that the recent case of a bishop who was revealed to have fathered a child places the Roman Catholic church in the UK in crisis. This is certainly a scandal, but cannot really be described as a crisis. The Catholic Church throughout the world has always been subject to sexual scandal, and some popes have even had mistresses at the Vatican itself. The Church's regulations have been broken on many occasions, but it has shown itself strong enough to survive.
