Highlights from a low life
Article Abstract:
American poet and author Charles Bukowski, who died in 1994, has gained a significant place in popular culture. Several memoirs have been published since his death, and he has also been the subject of documentaries, websites, fanzines and films. Collectors are prepared to invest large sums of money to buy the few remaining editions of his early books, and universities are willing to purchase his letters. Many of his poems have yet to be published.

The angry young man grows up
Article Abstract:
Writers must play a role in society, if only through words, according to novelist Ronan Bennett. He has been greatly affected by spending 18 months in prison after being found guilty in 1974 of killing a policeman. The verdict was overturned on appeal, but the experience has left a permanent mark. He feels that writing novels gives him more freedom than writing screenplays, as in novels words can be used for their own worth.
